Target ROAS.

Short answer

Target ROAS is the return on ad spend you need to keep a chosen profit per order, above break-even. It is AOV divided by what you can spend on ads per order after setting aside that profit.

Also called: goal ROAS, tROAS

The formula

Max ad spend per order = contribution - AOV x target profit%
Target ROAS = AOV / (contribution - AOV x target profit%)

An Acme Watches order averages $90 with $45.80 of contribution. To keep 15% of revenue as profit ($13.50), it can spend $45.80 - $13.50 = $32.30 on ads per order. Target ROAS is 90 / 32.30 = 2.79, against a break-even ROAS of 1.97.

Why it matters

Break-even keeps you from losing money; target ROAS tells you whether you are making enough. It gives the team one line to scale or cut on, and it makes the trade-off explicit: a lower target buys more volume at thinner profit, a higher one protects margin and limits growth.

How to improve it

Set different targets for different jobs: a lower one for new-customer prospecting, where repeat purchases add value later, and a higher one for retargeting. Revisit it when prices, costs or AOV change, and judge against it with the same attribution window you used to set it.

Questions, answered.

What is the difference between break-even ROAS and target ROAS?+

Break-even ROAS is where an order makes zero after ads. Target ROAS is higher, because it leaves room for the profit you want to keep.

Should I enter my target ROAS as a bid goal in Meta?+

You can, with a ROAS goal bid strategy. Starting a little below your real target helps avoid choking delivery, and you can tighten it as results come in.
