Creative brief.

Short answer

A creative brief is a short document that tells a designer, editor or creator what to make: the goal, audience, angle, key message, hooks to try, format specs, references and deadline. A good brief makes the first draft usable.

Also called: ad brief, content brief

An example

Kestrel & Vane briefs a creator for three 20-second videos. Angle: anniversary gifting. Audience: partners shopping two weeks ahead. Must-say line: free engraving. Hooks to try: a reveal, a question, a reaction. Specs: 9:16 with captions. The brief links two past ads that worked and one that did not, with a line on why.

Why it matters

Most wasted creative spend starts before filming: a vague brief gets a pretty video with the wrong message. Briefs also make tests readable. When each ad has a written angle and hook, you know what you were testing when the results come in.

How to improve it

Fit it on one page. Lead with the one thing the ad must make people feel or believe. Include real examples of what good looks like, list what to avoid, and state specs and usage rights up front so nobody re-shoots over a format or permission problem.

Questions, answered.

What should a creative brief include?+

Goal, audience, angle, key message, hooks to try, format and length, required lines or claims, references, deliverables, usage rights and deadline.

How long should a creative brief be?+

One page is usually enough. If it runs longer, the core idea is probably not decided yet.
