An example
Kestrel & Vane keeps a swipe file of 120 ads: 40 of its own past winners, 50 competitor ads that ran for months, and 30 from other categories with hooks worth borrowing. Each is tagged by angle, hook type and format. For a gifting campaign, the strategist filters for gifting and hands the creator eight references.
Why it matters
Good ideas are easy to forget and hard to find in a camera roll. A tagged swipe file turns scattered inspiration into something the whole team can use, and it makes briefs concrete: showing a creator three examples beats describing the tone in a paragraph.
How to improve it
Save with notes: why it caught your eye, its angle and hook, and how long it ran. Prune it, because thousands of untagged screenshots are no better than none. Borrow structure and ideas from references, and never copy another brand's ad.
