The first 147 characters show before "See more". Put the hook and the offer up there.

Front-load the first line.

People read what shows before See more. Count characters the way the feed shows them, then make sure the hook and the offer fit inside the shown part.

Shown text = primary text up to the recommended length, cut at the last whole word
Fits = characters <= Meta's recommended length for the placement

Recommended, not a hard limit

Meta accepts longer text. The lengths are where Meta says copy reads best, so treat them as a budget for what matters.

Reels is short

Reels shows very little primary text over the video. Put the message on screen, and keep the caption to one line.
Worked example

An anniversary gift ad.

Illustrative copy for a made-up watch brand. It is the text the checker starts with.

Search the words that sold.

Fovea reads the on-screen text off every frame and writes down every hook and transcript, so "free engraving" finds every ad that said it, next to how it performed.

Questions, answered.

How long should Facebook ad primary text be?+

Meta's Ads Guide recommends 50 to 150 characters of primary text for Facebook Feed and 125 for Instagram Feed (checked 2026-10-21). You can write more; it just hides behind See more.

How long can a Facebook ad headline be?+

Meta recommends 27 characters for a Facebook Feed headline and 40 for Instagram Feed. Longer headlines can be cut off on smaller screens.

Where does Meta cut primary text?+

It depends on the device, placement and the media below it, so there is no single number. The preview cuts at Meta's recommended length, which is a safe place to finish your hook and offer.

Do emoji count as one character?+

The checker counts what you see, so an emoji or an accented letter counts once. Some systems count certain emoji as two, so leave a little room.

Is long copy bad?+

Not always. Long copy can work for considered purchases. What matters is that the first line, the part people see before See more, carries the hook.
